Volunteers

Our volunteers are the heart of our organization

Villikettir volunteers perform a variety of tasks within the organization, and there are many things that need to be done to make our work successful. Examples include capturing and scanning cats, caring for cats in our shelters, registrations, managing veterinary appointments and foster homes, fundraising, and much, much more.

Please note – You must be at least 20 year old to be a volunteer!

Field work

  • Setting up and monitoring traps
  • Communicating with people who need assistance

Field work involves capturing cats and kittens that need help in one way or another. Traps are set up in the areas where the cat tends to hang out and then the traps need to be monitored. It can take varying amounts of time to capture cats, so you need to watch over the traps directly or via camera. This work is done in shifts and the traps are generally monitored 24 hours a day. Volunteers on duty need to be able to jump in on short notice when a cat enters the trap.

Working shifts in the shelter

  • Cleaning and feeding
  • Getting cats used to being touched
  • Petting and playing with those cats who want it

Villikettir operates shelters all over the country. They house both feral and stray cats while they wait to be rehomed or adopted. The work at the shelter mainly involves caring for the resident cats. Cleaning and feeding are a big part of that work, but it is also necessary to prepare these cats for their new homes with petting and playing. There are three shifts during the day: morning, afternoon and evening.

Feeding

  • Regularly replenish food supplies
  • Monitoring the condition of the cats in the area

When feral cats are released back into their home range after being spayed/neutered, it is important to ensure that they have food and shelter from the weather. Villikettir has food distribution centers in certain areas in several municipalities. A volunteer’s job is to fill up food containers and check that the shelters are in order. Along the way, you look around at the resident cats of the area and make sure they are in good health. The length of time each food distribution takes depends on the size of the area, but you usually go 2-3 times a week.

Fundraising

  • Conceptual work
  • Donation opportunities
  • Markets and events

The part of fundraising that volunteers are most involved in is working at a stall at markets and exhibitions. We sell all kinds of merchandise, from our Villikettir T-shirts to handmade items that we receive as gifts from our well-wishers. Sometimes we also need help with obtaining food donations for our cats. In addition, we run an online store that sells T-shirts, calendars, donations and other items.

Drivers for running errands

  • Pick up donations from sponsors
  • Transport a cat to/from the vet
  • Transport a cat to/from a foster home

We often need willing drivers who are ready to do all sorts of errands for the club. We regularly receive donations from suppliers that need to be picked up, such as food, kitty litter and toys. Villikettir’s good friends also regularly give us blankets, scratching posts and other things that need to be picked up.

In addition, we regularly need drivers to take a cat to the vet or to pick it up from the vet after surgery. In these cases, cats need to be at the vet before 8:30 am and are usually picked up between 2 pm and 5 pm in the afternoon.

Our Villikettir volunteers are not tied to one aspect of the work, but can choose what suits them at any given time. All you need to become a volunteer is a willingness to donate your time and a great interest in the welfare of cats.

We are always looking for more volunteers all over the country. If you are interested in participating in Villikettir’s work in any way, you can register below. We look forward to having you join our great group of volunteers! 🙂
